Guide to the best wheel fitment for your GR Supra

The MKV Supra might be one of the biggest reverse catfishes in history. When it was unveiled in March 2019, the car community donned their pitchforks and were ready to burn it to the ground. “That's not a real Supra!” Maybe a year or two later this sentiment had completely changed. It seems that once everyone saw and heard the new A90 in person, they completely forgot thats it's basically a BMW.

Regardless of who designed it, there’s no denying it's a good looking car, but some wheels make it look even better. If you’re here, you’re probably looking for wheel ideas for your A90/A91 Supra. Good news, you’re in the right place - fitment is our specialty. Despite there being a few variations: manual vs DTC, 2.0L I4 and 3.0L I6, all versious share the same fitment, front and rear. The info here will apply to all Supra’s 2020+.

Basic fitment info

  • Bolt pattern: 5x112
  • Bolt thread: M14 x 1.25
  • Center bore: 66.5 mm
  • Bolt torque: 103 ft lbs

Before we can talk about aftermarket wheels and tires, here is what your Supra will come with from the factory:

OE 18-inch cast wheels

  • Front - 18x9 +32 | 255/40R18
  • Rear - 18x10 +40 | 275/40R18

OE 19-inch forged wheels

  • Front - 19x9 +32 | 255/35R18
  • Rear - 19x10 +40 | 275/35R18

What can be said about the stock fitment? Whether you have 18’s or 19’s they will be staggered. A square set of wheels is possible on this car, but staying staggered is preferred. Overall, the fitment isn’t terrible, but we can definitely make some improvements.

GR Supra TE37

Wheels

18”, 19”, and 20” are the most popular sizes for aftermarket wheels. 20” wheels don’t come standard, but look good in certain applications. The brakes on the A90 make 18” wheels the smallest possible size, and really, you wouldn’t want to go any smaller anyway. Choosing what size of wheel to put on your Supra might be as hard as choosing the brand/model, all three options work well. The examples coming soon are ordered by size to help make comparison easy.

Width and offset are more aggressive than stock, but not too much. A popular combination involves adding ½” to the width of stock wheels, so 9.5” fronts, 10.5” rears. With this, you keep that factory stagger, just make it a bit more aggressive. Offset is a similar story, just subtract 10-20mm out of the factory +32/+40. An example setup would look like this: 19x9.5 +22 front & 19x10.5 +30 rear.

Tires

Stock rear tires @ 275 are pretty generous for the factory power figures. But a few more pounds of boost on the B58 can net 50+ HP; only a couple of years after launch people were already making 1000+ WHP. You’ll probably want wider tires.

So you wanna get wider tires, but how wide can you go? Logically, if you increase your wheels ½”, you could bump your tires up from 255 & 275 to 265 & 285. 265 & 285 are great if you want some extra breathing room, but a lot of Supra owners like to go bigger. 275 front & 295 rear is a healthy increase where you won’t run into issues (as long as the wheels are spec’d right).

There are some Supras with 305 rears, we’ll look at some, but the chances of rubbing increase when going to this size. Whether 305’s fit will come down to differences in tire manufacturers, suspension setup, and tire sidewall.

Aspect Ratio (sidewall) will vary depending on the diameter of wheels you go with - 18’s get larger profile tires while 20’s will get rubber bands. You will see 18’s, 19’s, 20’s, and what tires go with them when we get to the examples section.

Suspension, spacers & other mods

Lowering your Supra with springs or coilovers

Most of these cars are lowered in one way or another. Lowering springs are the most popular option for a daily driver that might get occasional track use. Unlike retro Supras that absolutely need coilovers to tame the beastly wheel gap, a set of springs works wonders on the MKV. Swift, Eibach, H&R, are just a few of the brands that make quality springs - pick your favorite.

HKS and a few others now make adjustable height lowering springs. They have the same ride quality as regular springs with the ability to dial in the height.

Coilovers aren’t a must-have for daily, but track-focused cars benefit from a set. Fortune Auto & BC Racing makes affordable options starting around 1k. If you wanna ball-out, you could go for a MSC Coil kit with external reservoirs, but be warned - they aren’t cheap. Another reason to go with coils is if you wanna be a fitment god - coils go lower than springs and are stiffer to help minimize wheel-to-fender contact on bumps.

Stud conversions

Ever heard the slogan ‘Keep your Toyota a Toyota’? Well, Japanese cars are supposed to have lug nuts, not lug bolts. So, ‘ Make your Toyota a Toyota’ with a lug stud conversion. This doesn’t affect fitment in any way, but it makes changing wheels so much easier. We had to mention it.

Make stock wheels flush with spacers

If you’re on a budget, you could consider bringing your factory wheels flush with the fenders by using spacers. The preferred look is slightly larger spacers in the front - e.g. 20mm front | 15mm rear. If you don’t have studs, you’ll need some extended bolts. Some companies sell spacer and bolts in a package.

The supra isn’t an entry-level car like say an 86 or 370Z, you won’t see as many budget or rep wheels on them. If you’re shopping for wheels, maybe save up to get something name brand. In the meantime, spacers are a good way to make your car look better.

If you’re ready to invest in a nice set of wheels, let’s look at some examples.

19” wheels on a GR Supra

Starting with the go-to size. 19’s fill out the fender arches while remaining fairly light. The only real downside, compared to 18’s, is the noticeable bump in price for both wheels and tires.

Volk TE37’s are possibly the most common wheels on this chassis, and they’re a good reason for that, they suit the car well. They’re so common, you could argue they’re getting played out. An alternative 6 spoke is the Gram Lights 57CR . Ultimately, get whatever you think looks best. Wheels are just one part of the equation. If you feel a certain wheel makes your car look too cookie cutter, there are plenty of other exterior mods to differentiate your Supra: diffusers, canards, EVS front fenders, etc.

This is what stock height looks like on 19” wheels, a little high for our liking, but maybe you live in a place with rough roads or have an extra steep driveway.

Notes Lowering springs, no rubbing or scrubbing. Flush fitment

This 2020 GR Supra shows how much of a difference a humble set of lowering springs can make. If you’re going to run 305 rear tires, a 305/30 will give a bit more room as it's over an inch smaller in overall diameter to a 305/35.

A lot of MKVs are on monoblock wheels, either flow-formed or forged. These two-piece Work Emotions show that dished wheels can look good too.

This 22’ GR is also on Work Wheels, but this time 3P VS-XX instead of 2P. Work Wheels is a JDM brand with a storied history of making some of the strongest wheels on the market.

305/35R19 will fit, but just barely. This is another car that makes a strong case for lowering springs. At this height, there’s no rubbing or scrubbing of the fenders. This setup is very similar to the last but with a 305/35 instead of a 305/30. The taller sidewall gives a bit of rake.

@jdmjane’s 2020 Premium was featured in an episode of BUILT. This car is designed for street/track use. For wheels and tires, it has a pretty tame setup as the engine is mostly stock, just with a tune. Unlike the other cars, Jane opted for coilovers over lowering springs. The ride height is set more or less the same as you would get on springs, but the coils will definitely have an edge on the track.

She added some other goodies like a lug stud conversion, EVS fenders, and much more. Check out the video for a full breakdown of the car.

20” wheels on a GR Supra

19’s are the go-to, but it’s hard to say what’s in second place, 20’s or 18’s? Aesthetics are the main motivator to run big-ol 20’s, they’re heavier and in most cases require an expensive 30 aspect ratio tire. If your tire is wider than a 255 on 20’s, you will need to fit a 30 sidewall tire (e.g. 275/30R20).

Lowering is a must. If you don’t wanna turn your MK5 into a donk, you’ll need to invest in some springs, coils, or maybe even more…

You don’t need to install an airbag kit and lay frame if you wanna run 20’s, but you have to admit it looks pretty sick. This is the most extreme example of why you should run 20” wheels - form>function. Not to say that 20’s can’t be used for spirited driving, but the main reason to get them is to fill out those fenders (or in this case, tuck the rear wheels to bed).

18” wheels on a GR Supra

We notice that 18-inch wheels seem to be a popular size for cars that get used on the track. With this size, square setups are also more common. Not saying you need 18’s or a square set for the track (see Jane’s car in the 19-inch wheel section), but there are some benefits such as cheaper tires and possibly more traction with a larger sidewall.

This is a build where function is the priority. These Titan wheels come in a pretty odd 10.7 size, but show just how wide you can go if you’re on stock suspension and can deal with a little poke to achieve more grip. These wheels need a 15mm space to clear the front struts.

If you have fitment OCD, this might be the setup for you. The front and rear match perfectly with this square setup - no spacers here. The rears fit almost the same as stock base wheels but will extend out 8mm (or about ½ an inch). The fronts will be a bit more aggressive, poking out ½” over stock, still nothing crazy. Not surprisingly, this car doesn’t have issues with rubbing, even lowered on springs.

Advan TC-4’s are quite a bit more affordable than other models if you don’t wanna shell out for GT Premium or GT Beyond.

Wrap up

Fitment on the MK5 Supra isn’t too hard. Look at the factory specs for reference: add half an inch to the width, subtract a few mill from offset, and voila! Flush fitment. The big decision is choosing the diameter: 18, 19, 20 - all of which will fit fine.

For tires, multiple cars on our list are running 305 rears. 305’s may or may not require additional work to fit, that’s why we recommend a 295 to ensure no hassle. In the front, 275 is pretty well-charted territory. If you have the correct wheel fitment, a pair of 275’s shouldn’t be an issue.
