Everything you need to know about BRZ/FR-S/GT86 wheel fitment

Why does the BRZ/FR-S/GT86 come with Prius tires from the factory? We don’t know the answer, but we can tell you what wheels and tires you should be running on your 86.

This wheel and tire fitment guide is specifically for the 2013-2021 Toyota 86, also sometimes called the Subaru BRZ or Scion FR-S, or maybe all three if you’re located in the States, like us. To keep this article consistent, we’re going to be focusing on original body cars. There are simply too many widebody kits on the market to make a cohesive guide that includes them all.

Being light and rear-drive, these cars will see all types of motorsports, the newer GR comes with a free track day after all. We’ll look at setups that are specifically geared to track driving, as well as fitment for daily drivers and stance/show cars. First, we’ll go over the basics you need to know.

Basic fitment info

  • Lug pattern: 5x100
  • Lug thread: m12x1.25
  • Center bore: 56.1mm
  • Lug torque: 90 ft/lbs

Because it's made by Subaru, the 86 platform gets a 5x100 bolt pattern. Referencing our catalog, we have over 50K wheel options in this pattern. Not bad, but compared with 5x114.3, there are only about half the options. You should be able to find the perfect wheels that bolt on without having to jump through hoops.

5x114.3 conversion

If you wanna jump through hoops you could consider converting your car to 5x114.3. The other option is buying 5x100 -> 5x114.3 conversion spacers, but who wants to do that?

5x100 to 5x114.3 conversion kit

Companies like GKTech make a bolt on kit, but is it worth $800+? Probably not. A lot of wheel manufacturers now cater to the 86 crowd by offering their products with suitable specs and 5x100 PCD. Unless there are specific ultra-rare JDM wheels that you just have to have, it's easier to select wheels in the correct PCD.

2017+ BRZ Performance Package

The Brembos that come with Performance Package cars will clear most wheels, but not everything. The minimum diameter will need to be at least 17” (you wouldn’t want to go smaller anyway). Some of your favorite wheels may not clear depending on the specs. Monobloc wheels have varying spoke designs depending on the exact width and offset.

RPF1’s, for example, will fit with 17x8 +35 but not 17x9 +35. For the most complete list of ‘go or no-go’ wheels, check out this post on ft86 club.

Examples of GT86/BRZ/FR-S fitment

Tires Firestone Indy 500 235/40R17 Firestone Indy 500 235/40R17
Notes 2017 BRZ performance package (Brembos), no spaces needed. Eibach lowering springs.

Starting with a 2017 BRZ that HAS Brembos. Rota Gravels are confirmed to fit without needing spacers, at least in these specs: 18x8 +44.

As far as fitment, these are only slightly more aggressive than stock wheels. They’ll give you about ¼” of poke. In the same vein, the tires are sized up to 235/40. Extra contact patch paired with sporty 340 treadwear tires makes this car noticeably more stable during cornering.

These specs are very similar to stock, therefore no fender rolling was needed.

Notes RCE Yellow Springs. No rubbing. Wheels confirmed to fit BRZ Brembos

Pay attention to the numbers here. A lot of 86 owners are running similar specs either with 17’s or 18’s. This fitment gets you flush fitment without adding much, or any, unsprung weight. A 245 is the key as anything larger will likely require the fenders to be rolled.

Whatever size of tire you decide on, you can’t beat a set of PS4S’s for summer performance, if you got the money.

This car is on lowering springs and doesn't have any rubbing issues.

Notes
Will not clear BRZ Brembos without spacers.

Here are the same specs, but with a 255 instead of a 245. To get this to fit you’ll need to do at least a bit of fender rolling, depending on the ride height. Either way: go thinner and don’t mess with the fenders, or go a bit wider and bust out the roller - it’s up to you.

The options for RPF1’s in 5x100 are limited. These specs should work great unless you have a BRZ with Brembos, then they won’t clear without 8mm spacers. Still, these might be some of the most popular wheels for this platform. The only issue is the limited options in 5x100.

Notes Slight roll on front fenders. Roll and pulled rear fenders. Slight rubbing

To run these specs you’ll need to do some fender work, but it’s definitely worth it if you plan to add a turbo or supercharger kit. TE37s are also super popular on this platform. Both TE’s and RPF1’s are super light they’re not going to make the car feel overly lethargic, although we’d recommend this setup for cars making significantly more power than stock.

Believe it or not, fitting 265/35 tires wasn’t that hard in the front, only needing the fender liners removed and some light rolling. 275/40 in the rear required pulled rear fenders and trimming inside the fender well. Even with this, there’s still some light rubbing in the rear - the fronts are fine.

Stanced GT86/BRZ/FR-S fitment

Majority of 86’s from our Gallery are absolutely slammed on coils or air suspension, so we thought it was only right to show off a few. You can assume that everything from this point on has rolled and possibly pulled fenders.

Some people might not like air suspension on a sports coupe, but sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do. This 2015 FR-S is sitting on a kit from Air Lift Performance with Work Meister S1 3P wheels.

This car is still running 9.5” wide wheels but with a lower offset than the previous one. It needed stretched tires plus a bit of extra camber to make it fit the stock body. We don’t know the extent of suspension work on this car, but it probably has rear arms to dial in the camber. Fender-to-lip fitment doesn’t just happen by chance, you have to order the correct wheels, then play with alignment to dial it in.

This 2014 BRZ is also on a kit from Air Lift Performance, possibly one of the most common kits. These wheels are significantly more aggressive, especially in the rear where a 12mm spacer was used.

So what’s needed to make them fit on the factory metal? This car has even more camber and tire stretch than the last. Plan on investing in a full set of suspension arms, along with the wheels… and the air suspension kit… building a stance car can be expensive.

Most of you won’t be going for this look, but for that one guy - here ya go.

This one throws all driveability out the window especially because it’s static rather than on air. If you plan to go this low on coils, be ready to rub and scrape on even the smallest road imperfections. This car is past stance and more in line with ‘onicamber’ fitment.

Wrap up

Regardless of the type of fitment, you’re going for, you definitely want to upgrade your wheels and tires - it’s arguably the first mod you should do to your 86. Unless you’re doing a full motor build you don’t need to go crazy. A 17 or 18” diameter wheel, 8.5 to 9.5 wide, with a 245 wide tire will give you all the grip you need for some spirited driving.
