2024+ Land Cruiser 250 and GX550 wheel & tire fitment guide

If you like overlanding SUVs, good news - the newest generation of Land Cruiser, and its Lexus counterpart, look a whole lot more like the retro Cruisers than the past 2 generations.

This gen looks less like something that Sharrell would use to pick up the kids from soccer practice, and more like something a cartel leader would drive. It's said to resemble the best mix of the Bronco and Defender.

In this fitment guide, we’re going to show you the wheels and tires that really turn this platform into an offroading monster. It’s still very new. In fact, some wheel manufacturers still haven’t got around to producing their products in the correct specs for these rigs. Compared with previous generations, the L250 has a redesigned suspension that uses a higher offset. We put together a collection of the best setups that are available right now, although more options will likely be coming in the following months or years.

Basic fitment info

  • Nut pattern: 6x139.7
  • Nut thread: m14x1.5
  • Center bore: 95.1mm
  • Nut torque: 96 ft/lbs

When buying aftermarket wheels, the most popular sizes are 18, a factory size, or 17, not a factory size but will clear the calipers. Compared with 20’s these smaller diameters use a chunky tire and will be far superior for offroading - hopefully the reason you considered a Cruiser or GX

‘1958’ edition vs the rest

The 1958 edition (base model) of the Land Cruiser comes with different fenders compared with the higher trims. The ‘Land Cruiser’ and First Edition both come with fenders that are about 1” wider. This means the 1958 will use a higher offset wheel to achieve a similar look to its counterparts .

From the factory, the 1958 gets weaker specs:

Factory Fitment
Wheels Tires
1958 18x7.5 +70 245/70R18
LC/FE 18x7.5 +60 265/70R18
Premium Package 20x7.5 +60 265/60R20

As for the GX550, all models from the Premium to Luxury to Overtrail all use the same body panels. All GX550 trims are equal in width to the LC and FE Land Cruisers.

35’s on a L250, TL;DR

The J250 platform has massive fender arches that can tuck some pretty big tires. From the factory, the 1958 comes with 31.5” tires and others get32.6”. We’re finding out that 35’s aren’t too difficult to fit but may require some mods to prevent rubbing.

Adding a leveling or lift kit will get you more clearance, that’s obvious. However, you can get away with no lift and still stuff 35’s; you’ll need to do some minor mods plus order the correct offset of wheels, more on this later.

Mods to clear gain clearance

The ‘mods’ aren’t really mods at all because you’re just removing stuff. Simply unbolt and unclip pieces that could be re-added later, if needed. The first things to go would be the mud flaps , crush brackets, and canards - all are simply unbolted

LC250 & GX crash bracket removal

If you need space you could radius the back of the front fenders and trim the front bumper by a few inches.

Overall, this platform doesn’t need work like a Cali Mod or other drastic cutting to fit 35’s.

A lot of people like to round the stock 265/70R18 tires up to 33”, even though they’re a bit under (32.6”). This is what real 33’s look like on a J250 with stock wheels. Not much, but it’s something. You can rest assured there will be plenty of clearance - no need for trimming or even to remove the mud flaps.

Not everyone is a fan of the stock Toyo’s. K02’s are an all-terrain that just about everyone likes.

We got ‘em in every size in our shop.

From here on out the rest of the examples will be on aftermarket wheels.

Will 17’s work on a Land Cruiser 250? Absolutely, and they might be the most popular size of aftermarket wheels. This ‘Land Cruiser’ trim is on 52Offroad Analog HD wheels. You’ll notice the offset is significantly more aggressive than stock, but still not like the older generations. This will give some poke at resting height, but when the suspension articulates the wheels will tuck into the fenders.

If you have a 1958 trim be sure to add 10-15 to the offset if you aim to copy this fitment.

Downsizing to 17’s is popular, but if you want to stay with 18’s that’s no problem either. Some argue that 18’s suit this platform better anyway.

This is a GX, so these wheels will look the same on a Land Cruiser or First Edition trim, everything except the 1958 trim. These tires come in around 34”, making them larger than the last example, but still easy enough to fit. This setup will work at stock height with no modification, only the mudflaps had to go.

Work Meister S1 ‘SUV’ wheels are offered in a good spec for the Cruiser if you like 18’s. These are slightly wider wheels with lower offset which will give a bit more poke, but still nothing absurd for stock height. Keep in mind this is a GX550. The Cruiser 1958 might have rubbing issues when the suspension is compressed; some adjustment to the alignment might solve this.

As far as tires, these are less than 34”, so fitment will be straightforward - only the mudflaps were taken off of this GX.

Here’s another JDM classic - TE37’s. These are a set of TE37XT M-Spec, specifically designed for offroad use. With 0 offset we can see a decent amount of poke. The aggressive offset results in some minor rubbing, but nothing that couldn’t be remedied with a bit of fender work.

If you own a 1958 or want to avoid trimming, check out the higher +15 offset option. Or, to see even more, check out the TE37XT lineup in our shop.

Notes ‘First Edition’.Tuff Country 1.5" leveling kit. No rubbing.

We’ve talked about how poke on an offroad rig should be proportional to lift. If you want to go with a 0 offset or less, it’s best to add lift or at least a leveling kit.

This 2024 First Edition has a 1.5” leveling kit from Tuff Country. This makes the negative offset Fuel Wheels look a whole lot better than if it still had the stock rake. Is this still too much poke? You be the judge. In our opinion, wheels around zero offset would pair best with a leveling kit, while negative offset should be reserved for lifted rigs.

If you want aggressive fitment, bear in mind that more poke = less clearance. Even with tires around factory size (33”), the shoulder of the tires will come closer to the fenders when turning.

35’s on stock suspension

Notes 2024 Landcruiser 1958 ‘1958’ trim. Front and rear mud flaps removed, front canards removed, ‘crash’ bracket removed, fender liners inverted.

35’s should be doable for any Cruiser or GX owner. It will require modification, but the work is mild in the world of custom 4x4 builds. You can make the job even easier if you raise the front, but it can absolutely be done at stock height.

This 2024 Land Cruiser 1958 is on stock suspension and only needed minor modification to fit 35’s. The mud flaps, canards, and crash bracket were removed. Otherwise, it only needed a heat gun taken to the plastic fender liners.

Wheel offset is key. The owner notes that 0 offset wheels with the same tires didn’t fit . These Method wheels are 17x8 +25, perfect for a 1958. Other trims could use a +10-20 for a similar look and fit.

Wrap up

If you don’t want people to call your L250 a Rivian, an aggressive set of wheels and tires helps. In this guide, we went over everything from a simple tire upgrade to stuffing 35’s on stock suspension.

This platform has a lot of potential. Lift and leveling exist, as we saw, but most of these rigs are still at stock height for the time being. In the coming years we anticipate a lot of aftermarket support: from metal bumpers, to running boards, to all the other goodies you can find on retro Land Cruisers.

If you got a Land Cruiser of any generation, be sure to add it to our Fitment Gallery to help others dial in their wheel & tire fitment.
